Feder: Media Burn wins grant to launch Guerrilla Television Network

Chicago s Media Burn Independent Video Archive has received a $459,150 grant from the Council on Library Resources to collaborate with the University of Chicago on digitizing hundreds of previously unseen videotapes from the 1970s, Robert Feder writes.
In addition to Media Burn s content, the new Guerrilla Television Network will include work from Appalshop, Community TV Network, Experimental TV Center, Kartemquin Films and New Orleans Video Access Center.

The grant marks a significant expansion for the nonprofit treasure founded in 2003 by legendary Chicago producer Tom Weinberg.

For Darrin Jackson it s more than Opening Day as he starts his 22nd season as color analyst for Chicago White Sox baseball broadcasts. Today also marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Ed Farmer, Jackson s close friend and longtime partner in the radio booth.
This has been the longest year in so many ways, Jackson told me. The state of the world, the state of our nation, and we ve all dealt with personal trials and tribulations. But for me, the loss of Ed s friendship and love can t be replaced. I m sure that I m one of at least a thousand people who feel this way. Ed was a person who made our world better. There hasn t been a day that s gone by where I don t miss him. He was great for the White Sox and better for the community. Other than that, he was just little Eddie Farmer from Chicago. ....

Twenty years ago today all eyes (and ears) were on a radio station in Chicago that had been stunting for weeks by airing only one artist or group each day from Barbra Streisand to Garth Brooks to The Rolling Stones. They even threw in entire days devoted to Broadway show tunes and TV theme songs.
Listeners were left to guess what the ultimate format would be.

One month earlier Bonneville International had paid a record $165 million for WNIB, a classical music station husband-and-wife owners Bill and Sonia Florian started for $8,000 in 1955.
The big reveal turned out to be WDRV 97.1-FM, a mix of classic rock and pop hits spanning the mid- 60s to the early 80s, presented with a pledge that the station would respect the music. It was branded The Drive. ....

Now it can be told: Veteran Chicago sports anchor Mark Giangreco may be on the verge of losing his job at ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7 because he used the word ditzy in an on-air comment about news anchor Cheryl Burton, reports Robert Feder.
ABC 7 bosses, Giangreco and his agent continue to stonewall on his unexplained absence for the last five weeks, but multiple sources confirmed Wednesday he s under fire for a remark at the end of his sports segment Jan. 28.

It s been five weeks since Chicago s most prominent sports anchor was last seen on the city s top-rated television station, where he s been a fixture for 27 years, Robert Feder writes.
But the bosses of ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7 have yet to explain or even acknowledge the absence of Mark Giangreco, leaving viewers in the dark and prompting co-workers to wonder if he ll ever return.

Calls and texts to Giangreco and his longtime agent, Joel Weisman, were met with the same no comment as those to John Idler, president and general manager of ABC 7, and his representatives. Crickets all around.
What s known for sure is that Giangreco, 68, made his last appearance on the air January 28. Except for a few random tweets, he hasn t been heard from since. He s also been missing as a contributor to Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman s afternoon show on Good Karma Brands ESPN sports/talk WMVP 1000-AM. ....
