Hunger deepens in Darfur camps: WFP in Sudan 'must make heart wrenching decisions' amid $366 mln funding shortfall

Soaring food prices, which have resulted in even the basics becoming unaffordable to the poor, are forcing many destitute displaced people in Darfur to face hunger every day, however the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan laments that due to a funding shortfall of $366 million for 2022, WFP is having to prioritise assistance based on the resources available and "make heart wrenching decisions, knowing that we cannot help everyone in Sudan who needs it”.

North Darfur's Kutum still far from secure, Saraf Omra 'under control'

May 7 - 2021 KUTUM / SARAF OMRA Gunmen in Darfur (File photo) A displaced man was killed by militant herders in Kutum, North Darfur on Thursday. Paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of Saraf Omra yesterday. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, activist Yahya El Khumus told Radio Dabanga that Mohamed Sabah was on his way from the Fata Borno camp for the displaced to Kutum town when he was shot dead by militant herders. “It happened in in Khor Jagedeldei, three kilometres from Kutum,” he said. “The perpetrators then fled in north-western direction.” El Khumus criticised the security forces in Kutum. “The joint forces were informed early, but arrived at the scene more than three hours after the attack.”

Sudan timeline January-March 2021: Holdout rebels in from the cold, Sudanese pound devalued, COVID-19 vaccine roll-out begins

April 26 - 2021 DABANGA SUDAN Arrival of COVID-19 vaccines at Khartoum Airport, March 3 (Ahmed Salim Yeslam / UNICEF) The first quarter of 2021 ended with much optimism, as the Sudanese government and the SPLN-N El Hilu signed a in Juba, however it has been a turbulent three months economically. The adjustment of the exchange rate of the Sudanese Pound (SDG) to reflect the parallel market value has caused consumer prices to fluctuate, and done little to alleviate commodity and medicine shortages. However Sudan’s opened the door to $2 billion in grants for development, which offers hope for the future. The beginning of 2021 has been marked by escalating tensions with Ethiopia. Several rounds of talks between Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia on the planned filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have resulted in a deadlock. Ethiopian refugees continue arrive in Sudan fleeing internal strife, especially in the Tigray area, and Khartoum.
