Savannah Morning News turns to local leaders to bring diverse viewpoints on issues


This is a column co-written by Executive Editor Rana L. Cash and Opinion Editor Adam Van Brimmer.
Nine months ago, we published our last “Our View” editorial. For decades, this column representing the views of the Savannah Morning News’ editorial board was the centerpiece of the daily opinion page. 
We halted this practice as part of a larger opinion content overhaul. We’d refined our mission, with a focus on fostering and furthering dialogue and engagement about the key issues impacting the community.
As we wrote then, that meant “featuring more community voices and less of our own.” 
That same piece featured a pledge the “Our View” editorial was not gone for good. The column would “appear on occasion, but only when the topic or issue promises to truly transform our community and calls for an institutional voice.” ....

Breonna Taylor case adds to heavy burden Black women must carry

It helps sometimes to let despair go instead of lugging it around. Soulful singer Erykah Badu’s words of caution  “You gone hurt your back, dragging all them bags like that”  foretold of days like these, when the burden of Black womanhood would be heavy.
The death of Breonna Taylor, followed by the controversial decision to not deliver an indictment in her death, was for many Black women another brick in a sack already filled with the weight of the world. ....
