Group Condemns Lawyer, Effiong's Incarceration By Akwa Ibom Chief Judge, Says 'Brazen Disregard For Human Dignity And Rights' Must Stop

A rights group, Centre for Change (CFC), led by Joe Okei-Odumakin has condemned the imprisonment of human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot. Effiong is serving a one-month prison sentence for alleged contempt of court after asking Obot to recuse herself from a case she’s handling. He had also questioned the judge for allowing armed security agents with AK-47 rifles into the courtroom. The lawyer was sentenced without due process on July 27, 2022. ....

Group Asks Nigerian Bar Association To Boycott Akwa Ibom Courts Over Inibehe's Illegal Incarceration

A human rights organisation, Citizenship Civic Awareness Centre otherwise known as Democracy Vanguard has condemned the brutal violation of human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong by warders of the Nigerian Correctional Service. SaharaReporters on Thursday reported that Effiong's beard was forcibly shaved off by prison officials. Describing the action as draconian, the group called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to boycott courts in Akwa Ibom state in solidarity with Effiong and other inmates that are subjected to judicial and prison brutality in silence. ....

How can faceless, armed guys run riot in Owerri, freeing 1,844 prison inmates and releasing 600 from police cells while burning down police stations and other government facilities? I don’t agree with people who believe that the nearby Army formation should have engaged with these people without intelligence, because the aftermath of such impromptu engagement will be a massacre of both the guilty and innocent bystanders. But if there was intelligence, military and police formation will know what to do exactly.
Owerri was almost laid in ruins, and many parts of the South East is today living under fear of IPOB, ESN or whoever it was that flexed their powers of destruction on that very day. Many innocent policemen and women have been murdered in cold blood. We have seen governors and senators exonerating Nnamdi Kanu and his contraptions as if they are afraid of him. ....
