Eirgrid proposals to include €2bn power line around Irish coast


 
Closing Dublin to new data centres is among proposals that national electricity grid operator Eirgrid will table in a consultation on the system’s future development.
It will also consider laying a €2 billion power line around the coast and dictating where future wind farms will be built.
State-owned Eirgrid must redevelop the backbone of the Republic’s power network to transmit electricity from renewable power plants to where it is needed, ensuring that the State meets its green energy commitments.
The company is putting four key proposals to the energy industry and other interested parties in a consultation document that will help determine how Eirgrid prepares its system to meet the Government aim of generating 70 per cent of electricity needs from renewable power by 2030. ....

Netherlands names new hydrographic survey boat - Naval Warfare


Hydrograaf is designed to replace smaller craft in Royal Netherlands Navy service.
The Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) christened its new prototype Expeditionary Survey Boat (ESB) on 26 February in a virtual ceremony in Den Helder.
Built by Damen,
Hydrograaf is 15.7m long, 4.18m in height and weighs 24t. This tonnage allows the boat to be transported aboard RNLN logistics support vessels such as Johan de Witt and Rotterdam, the Dutch MoD noted in a statement.
The ESB is designed to replace smaller 10m vessels currently being used by the RNLN for hydrographic surveys. It can reach speeds in excess of 20kt, said Peter van den Berg, deputy director of Damen Shipyards Den Helder. ....

Council officials in Cork city and county are this morning waiting for flood waters to recede before they begin an assessment of the damage done to the road network after almost 36 hours of torrential rain led to flooding in many areas.
Met Éireann had issued an Orange Rainfall Warning for Cork with forecasts of 80 mm of rain over a 48-hour period from Monday into Wednesday. At 8am today Met Éireann’s Meteorological Station at Cork Airport was reporting 55mm of rain since 8pm on Monday. ....
