ESB responds to new blockade of Laois electricity substation site that s part of a €110 million project Reporter: ); ); Ireland s State-owned electricity provider has confirmed that a protest prevented work on a power substation in Laois and the company has advised that legal action could be pursued to allow work to recommence. Residents who are part of the Ratheniska Timahoe Spink (RTS) Action Group mounted a protest at the site in Coolnabacca on Wednesday morning which prevented the entry of ESB Networks from accessing the site which is to be a hub in the €110 million Laois Kilkenny Reinforcement Project. Picture: Gerry Faughnan ); ); ESB Networks says the industrial action by network technicians who are members of the Independent Workers Union (IWU) is unnecessary. The industrial action was initially in the form of a work-to-rule since Monday, 19 April. This escalated into separate 24-hour strikes on Friday, 23 April and Thursday, 29 April. A 48-hour strike commenced yesterday, Tuesday at 8am and will continue through to Thursday at 8am. ESB Networks confirms that there has been limited impact to electricity customers as a result of the industrial action to date and contingency planning continues for the next 48 hours and beyond. ....
Dairy processing emissions continue to increase year on year. \ Philip Doyle Industrial emission from the dairy processing industry rose by 4% in 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said. The rise comes as the EPA, acting as the competent authority in Ireland for the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), released its preliminary analysis of greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. Emissions from Irish power generation and industrial companies fell by 6.4% (0.9m tonnes) in 2020, to their lowest level since the EU ETS was introduced in 2005. This compares with a decrease of approximately 11-12% across Europe. The EPA has said the decrease in emissions is due to the impact of lower production in some industrial sectors during the pandemic, combined with a significant drop in power generation emissions. ....

ESB’s energy supply business, Electric Ireland, will hold off on disconnecting customers unable to pay their bills until June 30th, the company said. Electric Ireland has had a moratorium on disconnecting customers in arrears while the Republic has endured a series of Covid-19 lockdowns since October last year. The State-owned company confirmed on Thursday that it would extend its current bar on disconnections until the end of June while the Government maintained Level 5 pandemic restrictions, which have forced 445,000 people out of work. ....
ESB claims Laois power plant report ‘alleviates’ water supply concerns Electricity company says substation does not threaten underground source Reporter: ); ); The ESB describes as “comprehensive” a review of the risk to water at the proposed Coolnabacca power substation. The State-owned company claims that the proposed development will “not impact” on local water sources and poses “no significant risk”. The company also contends that the study backs up previous studies undertaken on the development in the Ratheniska Timahoe area which involves an investment of over €100 million. “The independent review concludes that ‘substantial thickness of low permeability clay on the site eliminates any significant pathway developing to then bedrock aquifer, and hence the Kyle spring,” says the ESB. ....
