A man is in custody in the east bay this morning after a botched attempt to steal a car. Yesterday a hayward resident came out of his home to find another man stealing his truck. The victim chased the suspect as he drove away dialing 911 while following the man in another car. According to police, the alleged thief fired a gun at the trucks owner as he was being pursued. After Police Arrived on the scene the suspect drove towards the officers, causing one of them to open fire at the driver. The driver was not injured, however and was arrested after trying to flee the area on foot. A murder on the penisula and police are still looking for the gunman.
