We are learning more about the chp officer that was killed in a tragic Christmas Eve crash on the east bay freeway and the driver that hit his patrol car. Ann makovec is live. Reporter a bouquet of flowers sitting outside the chp offices. We are learning more about the officer who passed, a father of three, 33yearold officer Andrew Camilleri had been with the chp for only about a year. He and his partner were parked in their chp suv on the sold of southbound 880 when another driver rear ended them. It happened around 11 30 on Christmas Eve. Camilleri was in the passenger seat and his partner, officer Jonathan Velasquez was behind the wheel. Velasquez was treated at the hospital and released while the camilleri family got the tragic news. Children that were expecting their father to come home and help open christmas presents but instead he chose to work today. This is not the way we wanted to celebrate Christmas Day. Reporter and investigators say the driver of the car that hit the officer was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he drifted out of his lane. Hes a 22yearold from heyward and investigators are not yet releasing his name. Chp is not saying when there will be a funeral for the officer who passed away but it will likely be a large affair happening later this week. Live in heyward, ann makovec, kpix 5. The officer whos paed away had only passed away had only been with the force for chopper 5 was overhead yesterday morning as tow trucks took the mangled vehicles off the nimitz freeway in heyward of the chp suv crunched to almost half its size. That was the accident that killed 33yearold officer Andrew Camilleri. He was a husband, a father of three. He and his partner were parked in their suv, their chp suv on the shoulder of 880 when another driver rearrended them around rearended them. In california, its illegal to drive under the influence of drug or alcohol but unlike alcohol where a breathalyzer can give a solid number, there is no objective test for marijuana influence. Law enforcement just looks for indicators. Sergeant glen glazer teaches Highway Patrol officers how to spot someone who is high. He admits, its subjective. Its a judgment call because we want our officers argue only people who are impaired. Reporter once an officer believes the driver may be under the influence of marijuana, the driver can take a drug or urine test. The drug can only show if its in a persons system but it cant tell when the drug was taken. Professor tom marcot at uc san diego is leading the states multimillion dollar effort to create the right test. The ultimate outcome is see whether or not we can really help Law Enforcement separate those people who are impaired due to cannabis or those people who may have cannabis in their system who are not impaired. So far traffic is doing okay but if you plan on making the 580 drive be advised two lanes of traffic are shut down approaching stroh bridge. And eastbound 80 as you make your drive out of San Francisco, heading for oakland, so watch out for the semi truck. Its stalled out blocking the exit eastbound 80 approaching treasure island. Livermore, 35 and then look at that, santa rosa, youre clear right now, which is allowing your temperatures to dip below freezing, at 31 degrees right now. This High Pressure system is whats keeping things dry and because of that ridge, were going to have some onshore winds throughout the day, possibly some high clouds, even some fog along the coast. Looking at our futurecast and how this is going to timeout, mostly clear right now, but you can see the lowlying clouds that are starting to build in so especially along the coast youll see some cloud cover and possibly fog, even into the evening hours, we are timing it out into the evening commute at 8 p. M. Things to remember, were going to have a mix of sun and clouds, and then were going to have a mild afternoon. Later this week, everything is going to stay dry. Our temperatures are actually going to warm up a little bit. We do have a sparetheair alert right now, so no wood burning. Looking closer at that, in fact, you can see that in the north bay and the santa clara valley, unhealthy levels. Stay inside and make sure you leave the fireplaces nice and empty even though our temperatures are going to be cooler than they normally would be this time of year. Along the coast, 56 degrees in the south bay, 64 in loss catos. And then 63 degrees in brentwood. 59 degrees in vallejo and around the bay, 57 degrees in sausalito and alameda. 55 degrees in stinson beach. In the far north bay, you might hit 60 in ukiah. Your sevenday forecast shows the mix of sun and clouds today, especially around the bay and along the coast. Those are going to move out into wednesday, thursday and friday as your temperatures rebound. Were going to stay nice and clear. His partner was behind the wheel wand was treated and was treated at the hospital and released. Investigators say the driver of the car that hit the officer was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he drifted out of his lane.
