Aspen woman avoids jail time in careless driving plea deal after killing 5-year-old

A longtime local real estate agent pleaded guilty Tuesday to striking and killing a 5-year-old girl with her SUV in downtown Aspen more than a year ago.
And while Heidi Houston will avoid jail time as part of a plea deal, part of her sentence was to come up with a plan that honors Hannah Heusgen’s love of ballet and horses, and improves the safety of the intersection where the accident occurred in March 2020. ....

Pitkin County jury trials cannot begin until move back to Yellow

Jury trials that were set to resume in Pitkin County next week have been postponed until the state moves the county back to Yellow level restrictions, according to a judge’s order issued last week.
And even when Yellow restrictions resume, judges here will still need to receive permission from the 9th Judicial District Chief Judge James Boyd to conduct jury trials, according to the order from Boyd.
Because of the order issued March 25, Pitkin County Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely postponed a jury trial in her court that was set to begin Thursday until June, according to Ely’s order filed Wednesday. ....

Pitkin County's vaccinations schedule unclear with new guidelines

Vaccinations for Pitkin County residents 70 years old and up could take until the end of February, though new federal guidelines lowering that age to 65 means it could take longer, an official said Tuesday.
County Manager Jon Peacock said local and state public health officials have set the end of February as a goal to vaccinate all state residents in that age group. However, the Trump administration’s Tuesday announcement calling for residents 65 years old and up to be included in early vaccinations could cloud that goal, he said.
“It will take us longer … to get to the next level” if the state incorporates those new guidelines, Peacock told Pitkin County commissioners Tuesday during their regular weekly work session. ....

Aspen developer jailed after drug-fueled incident with gun

Clad only in his underwear and high on drugs, a local developer and hedge fund manager held a gun to his head Thursday night outside a relative’s home near Aspen and threatened to kill himself, according to police reports.
Nikos Hecht, 50, admitted to police he’d consumed alcohol, marijuana and cocaine half-an-hour before driving his Range Rover to the home and crashing it into another car parked in the driveway. He then allegedly began banging on a front window with a bloody hand while holding the black Beretta handgun to his head and demanding to speak to a person inside, the reports state. ....
