For decades, the old German Hill Cemetery near Estacada sat unattended, hidden under a tangle of brush and vulnerable to nature s fury and vandals.
Until now.
In early February, James Moriarty, chairman of the Estacada Cemetery Maintenance District, received permission from Oregon s Commission on Historic Cemeteries to clean up and adopt the George-area cemetery northeast of town.
It s a labor of love for Moriarty. He retired a few years ago after 24 years as a U.S. Border Patrol officer in Southern California. In 2018, Moriarty moved to the rural Clackamas County town to be closer to family.

County commissioners unanimously passed the first of two public readings of the ordinance after hearing public testimony on Tuesday, April 1.
According to John DiLorenzo attorney for David Hoover, Thomas Riley and other garbage customers in Clackamas County and partner at Portland-based Davis Wright Tremaine the new ordinance would allow his clients to hold Metro accountable to charge fees only based only on the actual cost of providing waste service.
House vote sends legislation to the Senate to ward off potential legal challenges
The conversion of hotels and motels to emergency shelters and low-cost housing would be eased under a bill that is halfway through the Oregon Legislature.
The House voted 41-12 on Wednesday, March 31, to send the bill to the Senate.
House Bill 3261 would exclude the conversion of hotels and motels purchased for emergency shelters or low-cost housing from land use challenges in cities and counties. Lawmakers made federal money available for such purchases last year under Project Turnkey, which is overseen by the Oregon Community Foundation.
Rep. Pam Marsh, D-Ashland, said some projects have proceeded, but others have stalled despite community support.

Clackamas County is investigating whether its Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) improperly used time to engage in a dialogue with Commissioner Mark Shull regarding disparaging statements he made on Facebook regarding Muslims and other groups.
During their March 4 meeting, Shull suggested to his fellow county commissioners that its VAC be dissolved in its current form and re-established using an application process looking at the military biographies of those interested in serving on the committee. Shull, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, said the goal of this reform would be to strip the council of any partisanship.
