During a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28, the commission voted 3-2 to not move forward with the due-diligence phase of the purchase of the Red Fox Motel in Estacada. Through a program called Project Turnkey, the Oregon Legislature has earmarked $30 million for the Oregon Community Foundation to administer funds for the acquisition of motel/hotel properties in eight counties and tribal communities affected by the 2020 wildfires, and another $35 million for the rest of the state.

Oregon legislative panel starts hearing policing bills Lawmakers continue work originating from 2020 protests of George Floyd s death. Five lawmakers on a House subcommittee will focus on Oregon s policing practices and the people who carry them out. They have already started public hearings on more than a dozen bills, some of them overlapping, that propose various changes to Oregon laws in the aftermath of last year s death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer and the nationwide protests it triggered. One hearing on two bills is scheduled Monday, Feb. 1. The subcommittee chair is Rep. Janelle Bynum, a Democrat from Clackamas who also leads the full House Judiciary Committee. Her District 51 straddles Multnomah and Clackamas counties.
