No one could have imagined the 2020-21 school year and how it would affect all of our students.
I know each school district has had significant challenges and opportunities. We certainly are living by this quote from Milton Berle: “If opportunity doesn t knock, build a door.
With so many doors having been closed to us over the year, we have been trying to build doors everywhere we can.
The end of the school year provides educators all across the state the opportunity to reflect on the work of the year, and this year is definitely a time we need to stop, be still and reflect.

In the past 13 months, so much of our lives have changed: what we can do, when we can do it and with whom we can spend our time.
In the midst of these changes and a restructuring of our lives, the economy to support us still is chugging forward. There are so many unfilled jobs, huge gaps in skills needed for high-wage jobs and simply not enough people to fill all the jobs even if there wasn’t a skills gap.
This leaves us ripe for innovation.
One of my mentors, Phil Schlechty, always said, “Nothing brings people together like a shared ordeal.”

In July 2020, schools around the state were developing a three-tiered instructional delivery model because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In most places, it went something like this: 100% remote learning, some version of a hybrid or blended model and 100% all in.
Over the course of this year, Ohio’s schools have been all over the place regarding implementation. At Tolles Career & Technical Center, we have been both fully remote and in a blended-learning model.
As you can imagine, at a career center, not being in school full-time is detrimental. We are all about experiential learning – just like adults are all about experiential working.
