Between Town Council work sessions on the Fiscal Year 2022 budget, the Finance Department found some savings, which the Council took advantage of by increasing funding for two organizations in the Community Support category: Block Island Health Services, which operates the Medical Center, and the BI Volunteer Fire Department.
At the Monday, March 29 meeting, Town Manager Maryanne Crawford read from a memo by Finance Director Amy Land updating previous figures. The Block Island Chamber of Commerce joined the School, BI Health Services, and the Fire Department on the call in hopes of receiving additional funding.

If you receive a phone call from Bill McCombe asking your age without first dispensing with the usual niceties, just answer the question. McCombe is co-director of the Emergency Management Task Group, and has taken charge of organizing Covid-19 vaccination events for full-time residents of Block Island.
McCombe has been busy making lists of year-round residents’ ages so that as many as possible can get vaccinated against Covid-19 when doses become available from the Rhode Island Department of Health and are dispensed according to age group.

The Town Council appointed R.I. State Police Captain Matthew Moynihan as the interim chief of the New Shoreham Police Department at its Feb. 17 virtual meeting. Moynihan will start on March 1, succeeding Chief Vincent Carlone, who announced his retirement in December 2020.
“In recent weeks I have been working with Colonel James Manni of the R.I. State Police in the transition to a new police chief,” Town Manager Maryanne Crawford told the council. “Vin Carlone will continue to work for the town until April 14, wrapping up some ongoing island work and court cases.
“Chief Carlone has completed forty years of service in law enforcement, a remarkable accomplishment in stressful times, and the last seventeen as police chief here on Block Island,”Crawford continued. “His polished, professional commitment to the residents and visitors of our fast growing island has been universal.”
