As a history professor, i am sometimes reticent to indulge in what i call anniversary history. Because i like my students to think that every single day is historic. But it does feel right to take a moment, take a day, and really think about what happened during that year. So thats what were doing today. The city of salem is going to be doing probably all summer long. We were formed with the idea of helping to keep alive the lessons of the trials, promoting awareness, empathy and understanding. Waterloo landlords want to know if theyre renting an apartment to someone with a criminal past. The city council is considering eliminating a portion of rental applications where youre required to disclose criminal convictions. Based on that information a landlord can then decide not to rent to them. Landlords of black hawk wants to protect the inexperienced landlords who dont know the rules. And they say some may not be able to preform a Human Rights Commission says its only hurting those who want to start a new life. By accepting somebody without doing their background check or asking that question you may inadvertently put a pedophile, a someone convicted of repeated issues of violence, next to someone you love, and nobody wants that. The idea is that when you go in for an application if the box is removed you dont signal to the employer or the landlord that you have a record and so youre treated as a human being.
