Punch Newspapers Sections Published 21 February 2021 THE recent killing of a lecturer of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, Stephen Nduka, and his friend, Chimaobi Nwokoro, allegedly by trigger-happy Nigerian Air Force personnel attached to the 211 Regiment of the NAF Base in Owerri, the state capital, is distasteful. It brings to the fore the unending menace of extrajudicial killings by security agents in Nigeria. Nduka, until his unfortunate death, lectured in the Department of Computer Science; Nwokoro was a fresh graduate of the institution awaiting his deployment for the National Youth Service. They were reportedly shot dead in a car on their way back from a church programme by the airmen stationed in front of the NAF base in Naze on the Owerri-Aba Expressway. Media reports stated that the officers opened fire on the car the lecturer was driving with three others as passengers because the occupants allegedly failed to “properly identify themselves.� ....
TODAY January 29, 2021 The Imo Police Command says it has commenced an investigation into Monday’s killing of two persons in Owerri, including a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. Its spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the command got the report about the killing and had initiated an investigation. On Thursday, the polytechnic’s spokesperson, Ever Nwosu, said Stephen Okonye, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, was shot by gunmen. Mr. Okonye was killed along with his friend, Chimaobi Nwako, a member of Rain of Life Bible Church, where the lecturer also served as an assistant pastor. Mr. Okonye hailed from Delta. ....

One of the victims has been identified as Stephen Okonye, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. Ever Nwosu, a spokesperson of the polytechnic, told reporters on Thursday that Mr Okonye was shot by gunmen on Monday, alongside his friend, one Chimaobi Nwako, who was a member of Rain of Life Bible Church, Owerri, where the slain lecturer also served as an assistant pastor. The late Mr Okonye hailed from Delta State, while his friend, Nwako, hailed from Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in Imo, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). ....
