When the Tokyo Summer Olympics were officially pushed back a year in March 2020, we knew it would affect the composition of the US Olympic track & field team. Just as the US did not send the same team to the 2015 World Championships as it did to the 2016 Olympics, the roster it will send to Tokyo in July will differ from the one it would have sent last summer. Younger athletes have had an extra year to develop; older athletes have had an extra year to decline, with the impact being biggest at the extremes. One year of extra maturation is a much bigger deal in a positive way for a teenager than a 25-year-old and one year of extra age is a much bigger deal in a negative way for a 35-year-old than a 25-year-old. ....

Sound Running Invite Results - 10 Runners Hit 5,000-Meter Olympic Standard

On Saturday night, several runners achieved Olympic and Olympic Trials standards at the Sound Running Invite.
Emily Sisson and Grant Fisher won the women’s and men’s 5,000-meters, respectively, leading ten total runners under the Olympic standard for the event.
In the 1500 meters, Sinclaire Johnson won the women’s race, with a U.S. Olympic Trials standard, and Josh Kerr won the men’s race.
Nia Akins and Josh Hoey crossed first in the women’s and men’s 800 meters, respectively.
In the latest COVID-adjusted meet geared towards helping runners achieve qualifying standards, the Sound Running Invite featured several career bests and barrier-breaking performances. ....

2021 Track Records - What's Behind All These Fast Times?


The times have been spectacular across the globe.
In Europe, four men broke the previous world half marathon record in December in Valencia, Spain. Earlier this month, Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia set a world record for the indoor 1500 meters on February 9, running 3:53.09 at a meet in Liévin, France.
Closer to home, Americans Sara Hall, Keira D’Amato, Martin Hehir, and Noah Droddy reshuffled the list of top 10 Americans in the marathon.
On the track, Donavan Brazier, Bryce Hoppel, Elle Purrier, and Grant Holloway have set American or world records.
High school and college athletes are in on the action, too. Hobbs Kessler set the high school indoor mile record with his 3:57.66, and Cooper Teare of the University of Oregon took almost 2 seconds off the collegiate mile record when he ran 3:50.39.
