Researchers suggest that mysterious booming noises called skyquakes are mainly caused by celestial phenomena, such as meteor explosions and supersonic aircraft zooming through the sky.
Described as explosive booms rumbling in the distance, skyquakes are widely thought to originate from the sky. These mysterious booms are often reported in the eastern coast of the United States where they seem to be coming from offshore.
In North Carolina, some skyquakes were so powerful that they rattled windows and caused buildings to vibrate. Last April, for example, a loud booming noise rang through several neighborhoods in southern Charlotte and caused the ground to shake. Meteorologists detected seismic activity but found no evidence of an actual earthquake or other seismic events that could have caused the celestial bo ....

The Mystery Boom Noise Has Been Heard Once Again In San Diego

Last week, residents of San Diego reported another mysterious boom noise, accompanied by the unsettling rattling of windows. The boom is the second to take place in the city in the past three weeks, which have been unaccompanied by earthquakes, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The booms are far from the first. For hundreds of years there have been reports of unidentified boom noises across the US. Sometimes accompanied by earthquakes, sometimes not, they have been heard during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 right up until January of 2020. They re often described as a rushing or rolling sound, and ocassionally are associated with cold temperatures rather than earthquakes. ....

Coastal residents in North Carolina have described hearing explosive noises with no apparent cause. Enigmatic booming sounds called the Seneca Guns have reverberated off parts of coastal North Carolina for more than 150 years, with some powerful enough to rattle windows and vibrate buildings.
Now, scientists are using seismic data to pinpoint where the explosions come from and what causes them.
They presented their findings on Dec. 7 at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But spoiler alert: They haven t quite solved the mystery yet.
The name Seneca Guns comes not from North Carolina, but from Lake Seneca in upstate New York where a similar phenomenon occurred. The lake s ominous booming sounds, described in 1850 by the writer James Fenimore Cooper in his short story The Lake Gun, had at the time been heard for centuries. ....
