Florida storm becomes a hurricane, threatening search efforts at collapsed condo

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) A storm that has lashed the Caribbean and the Florida Keys with pounding rain and gusty winds and complicated the search for survivors in a deadly condominium collapse has strengthened into a hurricane.
The National Weather Service said Tuesday that Hurricane Elsa was packing winds as high as 75 mph (121 kph) as it hurtled toward Florida’s northern Gulf Coast. The Category 1 storm is expected to make landfall between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday, somewhere between the Tampa Bay area and the Big Bend region. ....

Three dead as Tropical Storm Elsa speeds through Caribbean

At least three people are dead after Tropical Storm Elsa battered the southern coasts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The storm was centred about 175 miles (280 kilometres) east-southeast of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and was swirling west-northwest at 17 mph (28 kph).
It had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) as the tropical storm, which had been a Category 1 hurricane earlier on Saturday, weakened in its approach to Hispaniola and Cuba, according to the National Hurricane Centre in Miami.
The storm was forecast to hit Cuba next on a path that would take it to Florida, with some models showing it would spin into the Gulf or up the Atlantic Coast. ....
