Shadow Minister for Women and Education Tanya Plibersek says the federal government “acknowledges they’ve got a woman problem” in the budget as large amounts of money went to female-dominated industries and childcare.
“Childcare and aged care, we’ve got a massive skill shortage, we’re looking for people to work in those industries, those jobs are in every community across Australia but the pay is so low that we’re really expecting this largely female workforce to do it for the love of the work,” she told Sky News.
Ms Plibersek said with these industries Australians are “just used to paying people too little” and said even for women in high-paying jobs childcare is a concern but says it “is not a women’s issue” alone.
“We know there are a lot of highly skilled women and we know that it is usually women who end up giving up that extra day a week or extra two days a week, there’s a lot of highly skilled women who’d love to be doing more hours of work,

Liberal Party members who participated in the first removal of a sitting federal MP in Victoria in a generation said there was a moment when they realised Kevin Andrews was toast.
Sounding frustrated and defensive as he sought to keep his privileged position, Andrews cited the heavy responsibility of being defence minister in 2015, when Australian soldiers were fighting in Afghanistan, according to party sources.
Andrewsâ opponent, Keith Wolahan, had a neat comeback, they said: he was a platoon leader in Afghanistan for the 2nd Commando Regiment.
