On Monday, all of Scotland is expected to move into protection level 2, which permits theatres to open with social distancing and capacity limits agreed with local authorities. But in a survey conducted by the Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST), 96% of members responded that it is not economically viable for them to reopen under the current restrictions. The requirement of at least two-metre social distancing in venues means the 236-capacity Tron in Glasgow could accommodate 14 theatregoers (6% of its usual full audience). Dundee Rep, which usually fits a capacity of 455, would have an audience of 80 (18%). A one-metre distance between theatregoers would raise those audience numbers to 60 and 110 respectively. ....

Eleven theatres and performance art venues, including The Traverse Theatre, The Tron, The Festival Theatre, The King s Theatre, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and His Majesty s Theatre in Aberdeen say an urgent review is needed - or else significantly more public sector finance will be required to protect the already deeply damaged sector. With the furlough scheme ending in September, many freelancers across the sector still excluded from support are desperate for work, and audiences have indicated they are confident and keen to return , the Consortium has said. ....
A ROW has blown up over Glasgow missing out on millions in Scottish Government coronavirus lockdown support for performing arts venues without any call for applications. Ministers announced £3m in funding was going to just three charities leading to questions over how they were singled out. Aberdeen Performing Arts – which runs His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen Music Hall and The Lemon Tree – is to receive £1.4 million in new funds. Capital Theatres – which operates the Festival Theatre, the King’s Theatre and The Studio in Edinburgh – will receive £800,000. And Eden Court Highlands – Scotland s largest single-site arts venue in Inverness – will receive £800,000. ....
