Scottish theatres say reopening not viable under Holyrood Covid rules

Last modified on Tue 11 May 2021 05.35 EDT
Theatres in Scotland have called for an urgent review of Covid-19 social distancing restrictions for audiences, saying that the current two-metre rule leaves them in a perilous position.
On Monday, all of Scotland is expected to move into protection level 2, which permits theatres to open with social distancing and capacity limits agreed with local authorities. But in a survey conducted by the Federation of Scottish Theatre (FST), 96% of members responded that it is not economically viable for them to reopen under the current restrictions.
The requirement of at least two-metre social distancing in venues means the 236-capacity Tron in Glasgow could accommodate 14 theatregoers (6% of its usual full audience). Dundee Rep, which usually fits a capacity of 455, would have an audience of 80 (18%). A one-metre distance between theatregoers would raise those audience numbers to 60 and 110 respectively. ....

Performing art venues across Scotland are calling for a relaxation of planned social distancing reopening rules.
In Level 2, theatres, cinemas and other entertainment venues are permitted to reopen for the first time this year. However, venues planning to reopen must allow for more than two metres social distancing between guests.
The uncertainty in the sector, which has no clear route-map of when social distancing requirements may be lifted, is making it difficult for venues to plan. ....

Theatres in Scotland will be able to reopen from 17 May, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has revealed.
While a major step forwards for the arts world in the north, the news was dampened somewhat by the revelation that audience members must adhere to a two-metre social distancing system, more severe than England s one -metre-plus rule.
In fact, 11 of Scotland s leading arts venues, as well as the Federation of Scottish Theatre, has called for a review of the requirements, saying the current 2m+ requirement makes presenting and producing work financially unviable in almost all contexts , with 96 per cent of members unable to operate in an economically viable way. ....
