BRYAN, TEXAS — The Bryan College Station group of Black Lives Matter is doing their part down south by spreading awareness of mental health calls while seeking justice for Bryan native Patrick Warren Senior.
Warren Sr. was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Killeen after a mental health call on Jan. 10.
Organizers of the peaceful protest and prayer Saturday said they chose the corner of 29th and Texas Ave because of its location and high traffic volume. Even though Patrick Warren Sr. did not lose his life in his hometown of Bryan, residents here say they are still seeking justice. ....

Lawmakers in Texas Hoping to Dump Confederate Heroes Day
This isn t the first time that Texas lawmakers have tried to eliminate Confederate Heroes Day . They ve been trying to get it done for several years.
Confederate Heroes Day has been a state holiday since 1973. Lawmakers at the time decided to combine two holidays celebrating the two Confederate Generals: Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. January 19 was chosen because it was  Robert E. Lee s birthday.
According to a report from KXXV Channel 25, Texas lawmakers have introduced two new bills that would eliminate the state holiday.
University of Houston professor, Brandon Rottinghaus says, This has been a controversial holiday since it was created. It’s been a point of contention because there are people on both sides who have strong feelings.” ....

Community leaders welcome conversation about racism


Outrage, grief and calls for change took the nation by storm after the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a Black man with Texas roots who died while under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer.
On May 29, a Friday evening, a couple dozen people held signs at the southwest corner of Texas Avenue and George Bush Drive in College Station; the following day, a gathering of about 250 held signs and chanted “Black lives matter” and “Say his name! George Floyd.”
On the evening of May 31, several hundred people lined Texas Avenue for more than three hours; one week later, more than 1,000 people filled several blocks of sidewalk and grass in the same location as cars drove through, honking their support. The summer of 2020 also included a unity prayer event led by clergy, a forum featuring law enforcement leaders, and multiple protests on the Texas A&M campus. ....
