Half it or so ago for his last book and this time we have him here virtually from his home and were going to talk about his new book about the 1948 election so were going back 72 years to another Election Year and youre going to be amazed at how similar it sounds in some ways, in other ways its different but in some ways, the politicians were all younger than they were today so thats one big difference but aj, take it away and tell us about the overview of the book. Just a very good read by the way. I want to say a couple of things first. Thank you so much for having me. The Commonwealth Club is a wonderful place to be and a lot of people are going through a lot of pain and suffering. For myself, im reminded why i fell in love with reading when i was six years old because bookscan transport you to another time and place and during all of this thats been a blessing. Regardin ....

I think of students in college as the best thing to do is to take the teacher, not the course and hear to take these incredible authors and to be in the room, whatever they are talking about. The problem with this festival is there is somebody in every room you want to be with. Douglas brinkley has written biographies of more president s than most of us have ever heard of. Other interesting things a prime focus on the space program. The great space race. Be watching for that. And hes a cnn historian. He has a little basement studio envy of jon meacham. And Margaret Macmillan is trying to make the deal with cnbc. The great historical deal one of those transformative books but so important and jon meacham has written so many wonderful biographies, former editor of newsweek. The assignment is to talk about your favorite historical figure. I want to make that a fun thing so maybe we will get into some other elements. John why dont ....

They have also done some the other interesting things. American shots. He is the cn and historian. He has a little bit of basement studio and envy of john meacham. Whos got that at msnbc. Of course the great tester in 1919. Just a transformative book that is so important. Many of us know him from his basement with morning joe. Can to reverse in this country for a long time we saw ourselves as a country with a racial problem underneath that that there are pure races that exist in this country a white race from europe for a black race from africa and an asian race from asia and the latino race. I dont know where or even that the actual name comes after the attempt to take somebody something from somebody happens so define problem but really it is the things about we continue to do to this very day. But the way that racism is a figure into the idea of race we will talk about a particular power it was created through the housing policies sold talkedabout the place and also in our daily lives. Guest. Let me say the fact that we live separately every metropolitan area has a nervous implications for so maybe you can start there and talk about housing in and how it affects us in our daily lives. Test captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2008 some democrats were perfectly willing to have integration in the north as long as they could preserve segregation in the south, going back to the time of slavery, never a dispute whether it could be prohibited in the north, we had border state problems in missouri and kansas, but the north was free to integrate as long as is the south could preserve segregation. That doesnt explain the housing issue. The other reason i think is that well i guess its not really an answer to your question why they did it, why its so hard to think about this problem, and that is we desegregated formally every area of American Life but when we desegregate busses the next day africanamericans can sit anywhere on the bus, desegregated lunch counters and the next day africanamericans could sit down at the lunch counters. We desegregated ....
