与此同时，莫高窟守护者的饮用水，也已经由喝大泉河的苦咸水，改喝水质好了不少的井水，如今正在进行井水置换，将喝上更高标准的城市自来水。

如今，莫高窟仍保存有从前凉至元朝的洞窟735个、壁画45000平方米、彩塑2400余身，是世界上延续时间最长、保存最好、规模最大的佛教艺术宝库。
“莫高窟建造洞窟的必要条件之一是要有水源，而大泉河正好流经莫高窟，为开凿建造洞窟的工匠提供了必需的生活用水。”敦煌研究院总务处处长张殿军说，大泉河的下切，为石窟开凿提供了良好的场所，同时河水为洞窟开凿和守护寺僧所用，便利的用水条件，使凿� ....
