　　“莫高窟建造洞窟的必要条件之一是要有水源，而大泉河正好流经莫高窟，为开凿建造洞窟的工匠提供了必需的生活用水。”敦煌研究院总务处处长张殿军说，大泉河的下切，为石窟开凿提供了良好的场所，同时河水为洞窟开凿和守护寺僧所用，便利的用水条件，使凿窟造像延续千年。
　　《唐陇右李府君修功德碑记》记载，唐朝时的莫高窟“前流长河，波映重阁”。而作为饮用水源，大泉河不仅养育了各个时代的莫高窟僧人，莫高窟的现当代守护人也曾经饮用大泉河水。
