Poem. it s very hard to keep that agenda hidden. do you normally channel all of your frustration and outrage through rhyming? like at home, say? no, no, not at all. this was a brand-new idea that was the last thing on my mind. i ve always had a subversive satirical streak if you think of third rock from the sun. we sort of poked all sorts of subjects. but always in an extremely entertaining and wacky way. that s kind of the tenor of my book. i want to hear some of this poetry. will you read some of it? i m going to use this one because i marked one. the name is dumbty. there are four poems that run through it. it s interspersed throughout the book. yes. it s one of the little motifs that go through the book. this is the last of them. and i also did the illustrations ....
dumpty. he joins us live. wonderful to be here. you re a poet. well, yes. i m a little hesitant to call myself a poet because i have too much regard for real poets. i am a sort of dogeral rhymester. you are good at rhyming. this is obviously a skill of yours that you ve been cultivating for some time. not consciously, but i ve always written ridiculous littl school graduations, using the names of all the graduates. do you think you missed your calling? do you think you should have devoted the last several decades to poetry? i have missed so many callings. acting was a huge misstep early on. so at all these other things, i m simply a very good actor. fair to say you re not a fan of the president s. that s what i picked up from the ....
maybe. maybe. getting us to talk about it on tv. so you don t like this whole idea, either of you? i think it s fine. i think, look, i m a journalist. i offer sources anonymity all the time, but i don t think there s anything especially honorable about speaking anonymously, as david points out. you know, look at ambassador taylor who was a really remarkable public figure. i had the privilege of working in the federal government for a few years. you see how many people in the federal government are sensational, highly skilled, dedicated people and you know whose names we don t know. and taylor is a classic example of this. vietnam veteran. served and then went from the military to the foreign service. it s an extraordinary story. and that s a lot more admirable than some clown writing a book. and bill taylor is still working for the u.s. government. so far as we know. as far as we know. it is interesting he chose to ....
