died. he was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and her father in 1989. an investigation is underway to determine if it was a botched execution. it will add scrutiny to the death penalty debate. reporter: nearly two hours after his execution began, condemned arizona inmate joseph rudolph wood was pronounced dead. the convicted murderer gasped and snorted for more than an hour and a half. you heard a deep sucking, air snorting sound. reporter: they wanted to stop the execution while under way but the high court allowed it to proceed. at a certain point, you wondered if he would die. reporter: woods case will add to scrutiny after botched executions last january and april. woods defense attorney filed several appeals that were denied. everybody from what i heard said it was excruciating. you don t know what excruciating is. reporter: wood was convicted in the 1989 shooting deaths of 29-year-old debbie deeds and 55-year-old gene deeds. they say they have no p
