Last orders: 25% of Ireland s pubs gone for good – dpa international

Almost 2,000 pubs have gone out of business in Ireland since 2005, a decline of around 25% that was accelerated by the country’s long Covid lockdowns. With inflation reducing consumer spending power and surging costs for electricity and fuel making it more expensive to run a business, many of the country’s pubs face a "real fight for survival," according to a report published by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI). The pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 saw 349 pubs go out of business, with a further 108 closing in 2022 while the pub industry was "fighting to recover trade" after the lockdowns, said report author Anthony Foley of Dublin City University Business School.
