The only comfort for the politicians who planned Brexit is that it has been eclipsed by the greater crisis of Covid-19. And they can still cling to the hope that the problems will be ironed out. British ministers put the early logjams down to “teething problems”. But as one commentator remarked that, for some, Brexit now feels more like having root canal surgery without the benefit of an anaesthetic.
