The former champions had a poor 2020/21 season where they finished 11th on the log and had to compete in the play-offs to survive the drop. The Calabar-based club finished top of the NWFL play-offs, which involved Abia Angels, Ibom Angels and Dreamstar Ladies in Benin City on Tuesday. Speaking with The PUNCH, a delighted Hodo said they had set a target of reclaiming the title next season.

The 2020/21 NWFL play-offs is scheduled for the University of Benin Sports Complex, Benin City from May 7 to 11. Former champions Pelican Stars, Abia Angels, Ibom Angels and DreamStar Ladies are the last four teams in the league and will participate in the play-offs, which will determine the two teams to be relegated.

Former champions Pelican Stars, Abia Angels, Ibom Angels and DreamStar Ladies were the four teams involved in the play-offs, which were played on a round-robin basis from May 7 to 11. Heading into the final game, Calabar-based Pelican Stars needed a draw against Ibom Angels to ensure topflight safety, having drawn 1-1 with Abia Angels, before beating Dreamstar 4-2 in their first and second fixtures respectively.

Pelican Stars, Abia Angels Survive Relegation

By Adibe Emenyonuin The duo of Pelican Stars Football Club of Calabar and Abia Angels of Aba yesterday escaped relegation at the University of Benin Sports Complex and thus will remain in the elite women’s league. Pelican Stars finished tops with five points on the table after playing a goalless draw against Ibom Angels in their last Playoff game. They went into the match with four points from two matches. Abia Angels of Aba finished second place with four points and zero goal difference to join Pelican Stars as the second team to escape relegation and remain in the NWFL Premiership.
