sandra: mercedes joins us in a moment, but first, matt is live on the ground in moscow, idaho. kohberger entered a rather unusual or uncommon plea today. we did not hear much from him, that s a big part of it. that s right, a couple minutes ago inside of the county courthouse, the attorneys for bryan kohberger told the judge they will stay silent on all five charges related to this murder case. therefore, the judge entered default not guilty plea for bryan kohberger and his attorney asked for a six-week trial beginning in october and no sides objected to that date. kohberger appeared in person in the past hour inside the courtroom wearing orange prison garb and this courtroom is basically a walking distance from the murder site where the four students were killed shortly before last thanksgiving. kohberger was wearing orange prison garb, looking extremely alert and observant. answered loud and clear, and today he was arraigned on four charges of murder in the first-degree

hello, everyone, i m kate bolduan. at this hour, we re going to be starting in memphis. that city and far beyond that city, are now just hours from waiting for and receiving the release of around an hour s worth of videos that capture the police beating of tyre nichols. what has been described by every person who has seen it so far as a brutal attack that prosecutors say led to his death three days later. all five of, and we ll show you these now fired officers, are now charged with murder. and other serious crimes. in an exclusive interview with cnn, the memphis police chief said the video is perhaps worse than the police beating of rodney king decades ago. nichol s mother described the injuries that her son suffered at the hands of police. they had beat him to a pulp. he had bruises all over him. his head was swollen like a watermelon. it is horrific. and the humanity of it all. where was the humanity? they beat my son like a pinata. tyre nichols s mother there was ta
we begin with our top story. memphis, tennessee, now on edge as officials brace for potential unrest over the release this evening of video capturing the traffic stop and con tronation that left a 29-year-old black man dead. he died in the hospital three days after his encounter with police in which five officers are accused of beating him. his family shared this photo of him in the hospital. the attorney for nichols family says the video shows police treating nichols like a pinata. the family has urged the public to demonstrate peace think. his mother spoke to cnn about her son s death. i just feel like my son was sitting here on assignment from god. his assignment was over. it s over. he was sent back home. god is not going to let any of his children s names go in vain. all five officers associated with this incident have now been fired and charged with second-degree murder. as of this morning, four of them have been released after posting bail. one remains in custody.
