Goldberg said it was the community engagement aspect that drew her in. “We are all really pleasantly surprised how quickly it took off and how many people have participated in just the first week,” she said. There’s been a mix of photography, drawings, watercolor paintings, mixed media art, pour paintings and more. “We love the variety of art and encourage small 3D works also,” Goldberg said. “Art helps everyone feel good and we want everyone to be creative and add to the arts in Sharpsburg.” Artists are encouraged to print their name on the back of the piece in an effort to build their portfolio. Fox Chapel Area High School and Dorseyville Middle School students won awards as part of the virtual 87th Annual Region 7 Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). District first-place winners were seniors Jackson Romero and Sanjay Seshan; juniors Zoe Lakkis and Siddharth Yende; sophomores Lawrence Liu and Arvind Seshan; freshmen Lakshanya Rajaganapathi and Adhitya Thirumala; and eighth graders Anna Delale-O’Connor, Etash Jhanji and Rohit Velankar. First-place winners qualified for the state PJAS competition which will be held virtually in May. ....

Fox Chapel Area middle school and high school students could return to the classroom full-time by mid-March, Superintendent Mary Catherine Reljac announced Monday. “After carefully weighing the appropriate time to bring students back, I’m recommending a shift to 5-day per week, full-time in-person instruction for pre-kindergarten, Dorseyville Middle School and the high school,” Reljac said. If approved by the board during its March 8 meeting, the switch would be in effect on March 15. “We’ve shown that if there’s a need to close, we have done it, so if we’re confident that we can meet the guidelines to open, I’m in support of the move,” board member Amy Cooper said. ....

A total of 39 Shady Side Academy students in grades 8-12 won 71 awards in the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional competition. The winners include 19 eighth graders from SSA Middle School and 20 students at SSA Senior School. Twelve students won Gold Keys to advance to the national competition, for which medalists will be announced March 17. Gold Key art winners were: freshman Benjamin Bischoff in Drawing & Illustration for Last Breath; junior Marnie McCormick in Ceramics & Glass for two works, Molten Bowl and A Bowl Made for Lemons; freshman Yuntong Pan in Painting for Rest; senior Melissa Riggins in Ceramics & Glass for Waterfall; and senior Xinru “Vita” Yang in Drawing & Illustration for three works: two self-portraits and Umbrella. ....
