I am reminded of watching my mom plant her first herbs and flowers of the season, walking through the farmers market in my hometown and spending time in the sun with the ones I love. It s been almost two years since I ve seen my family. They live in the States, geographically not too far from Montreal where I live, but everything feels farther away these days. Since I haven t been able to see them, I rely on memories; I ve held onto them especially tightly this year. It has added a range of new masters and certificate programs in education, sport performance, supply chain management, leadership and ethics and more, while introducing an undergraduate degree in social justice and civic engagement, among other initiatives. Much of this flurry of activity was planned before the coronavirus pandemic slammed the country, according to multiple faculty and college officials. But the moves reflect the perils of sitting still that have only been highlighted by the rapid upheavals of the past year. ....
The college opened in August with in-person learning, but a move to online classes was announced before Thanksgiving and lasted through the end of the semester. The college offered a new winter semester entirely online to help students catch up or advance. Since Feb. 15, classes have been mostly in-person, although the option of totally online learning has continued for students who see it as a less risky option. Thirteen percent in the fall and 15 percent in the spring chose the internet-only option, according to Hanrahan. What s new in academics? We ve greatly expanded our graduate studies, Hanrahan said.
