Quebec's decision to lift restrictions strays from science, public health experts say

Article content
Thirteen months into the pandemic, Quebec has found itself in the midst of a third wave and public health experts are wondering why the government isn’t doing more to stop the spread of the virus.
“I understand the desire from the government’s perspective to give people a little bit more freedom,” said Prativa Baral, an epidemiologist and a PhD student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “But the thing is, the longer we wait, the longer we do these middle-ground restrictions, the longer this pandemic will last.”

Artists clock in to continue school's Art Day tradition

This time-honored tradition was originally conceived in 1984 by retired art teacher Al Williams. Over the years, Williams nurtured young artists at several schools and, no matter where he taught, Art Day was part of the curriculum.
Eleven years ago, Sheppard took over the Montford art room when Williams retired and nothing, not even a global pandemic, will stand in the way of Sheppard carrying on the Art Day legacy.
This year the event had to be completely reimagined. Sheppard confessed “the new normal was making it seemingly impossible to have this event but I figured if there was a way for students to learn remotely, there must be a way for Art Day to happen. If the students can Zoom in every day, why can’t the artists Zoom in?”  ....

Why this Montreal couple is donating $1 million for COVID-19 research

MONTREAL
Suzanne Legge and Jeff Orr knew they had to do something when coronavirus progressed into a pandemic.
“As the pandemic and COVID came out, it really exploded onto our dining room tables, if you will,” said Legge.  “We’re all talking about it.
Over the next 8 years, the Montreal couple will donate a total of $1 million.
This year, the funding will go to McGill University’s Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity, often referred to as MI4. Dr. Donald Sheppard is the director of MI4.
“We launched our COVID response back in January 2020, believe it or not,” said Sheppard. “Before it even hit Canada and long before people were convinced it was going to be a pandemic.” ....
