Chiles student Macey Hartman is one of first female Eagle Scouts

When Macey Hartman moved back to the United States after growing up in Europe for eight years, it took her a while to find a group of friends in Tallahassee that she clicked with. “My dad was in the Navy, so we deployed as a family and lived in Portugal, Italy, and France,” she says. “It was great to learn about different cultures and gain a broad view of different kinds of people.” She soon found that her love of the outdoors, adventure, and challenge drew her to scouting. Macey is one of Tallahassee’s 5 Young Women to Watch for 2021. 

Artists clock in to continue school's Art Day tradition

This time-honored tradition was originally conceived in 1984 by retired art teacher Al Williams. Over the years, Williams nurtured young artists at several schools and, no matter where he taught, Art Day was part of the curriculum. Eleven years ago, Sheppard took over the Montford art room when Williams retired and nothing, not even a global pandemic, will stand in the way of Sheppard carrying on the Art Day legacy. This year the event had to be completely reimagined. Sheppard confessed “the new normal was making it seemingly impossible to have this event but I figured if there was a way for students to learn remotely, there must be a way for Art Day to happen. If the students can Zoom in every day, why can’t the artists Zoom in?” 

COVID vaccine: 5,800 seniors waiting on a call; 6 Big Bend residents die

More than 5,800 people are still waiting on a COVID-19 vaccine from the Leon County Department of Health. We are not able to provide an approximate wait time for call backs and continue to ask our senior community for patience as we continue to manage a high volume of request forms, Pam Saulsby, Leon County health department spokeswoman, wrote in an email to the Tallahassee Democrat. The local health department did not specify how many doses of the vaccine it currently has and noted that the vaccine doses it does receive are shared with local healthcare providers. Saulsby added that if seniors miss a call from the health department or Leon County volunteers, their names remain on the department s master list. Volunteers will continue to call, but will not leave voicemails, she said.
