As part of the ongoing effort to protect Californians from fraud and ensure the integrity of the state unemployment system, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) in partnership with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the California Employment Development Department (EDD), and the State’s Districts Attorneys, the US Attorney’s Office announced additional progress by a state-led task force on investigations and interdiction efforts and has instituted new safeguards to protect Californians from fraud. Since being established in November by Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Task Force on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Fraud has led to the arrest of 68 individuals and opened 1,641 additional cases. ....
The Shawnee News-Star Tecumseh Public Schools announced the end of a green lockdown Thursday morning after being notified by area law enforcement that the two escapees from Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center were apprehended without incident. The district said it would resume its normal school day. According to Tecumseh Police Chief J.R. Kidney, around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, two individuals escaped from COJC, prompting Tecumseh school sites to enact lockdown measures. Kidney said law enforcement formed a perimeter and checked all the areas surrounding the facility. After receiving tips from Tecumseh citizens who spotted the two escapees, he said police were able to apprehend the juveniles near Gaddy and New Hope Road just before 11 a.m. ....
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) in partnership with State’s Districts Attorney’s and the US Attorney’s Office continue to investigate and remediate fraud within state and federal unemployment insurance programs. Under the guidance of this state level coordination group, new safeguards have already been put in place to protect Californians as ongoing investigations continue to move forward in a collaborative fashion. Established on November 24, the state level coordination group on unemployment insurance fraud – which also includes participation from the Federal Bureau of investigation, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) among others – has worked closely with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) to employ new tools and bolster existing programs to strengthen its fraud detection methods.
