Theater Notebook: San Diego Rep's 'Before Fiddler' takes Felder and company on the road to Italian Riviera

On Sunday, San Diego Repertory Theatre will host the world premiere of “Before Fiddler Live from Florence,” Hershey Felder’s sixth music-filled play streamed live from his home in Florence, Italy, since last May.
Fans accustomed to the playwright/actor’s solo shows expect to see him playing piano as he tells the story of a famous composer. But “Before Fiddler” is a first in many ways. Streaming live at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, is about the famous 19th-century Yiddish author and playwright Sholem Aleichem, who was known in his day as the “Jewish Mark Twain.” Several of his semi-autobiographical stories about Tevye the milkman inspired the Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” ....

Theater Notebook: La Jolla Playhouse's 'A Thousand Ways' aims to create connection

The interactive theater project is a trio of encounters between strangers that take place over several months.
Part 1, which will begin Thursday, is a scheduled phone call in which two audience members will be paired together to create a shared fiction through a series of prompts. Part 2 will take place in a few months, when two audience members will sit at a table, separated by a pane of glass, to create another story using a stack of index cards, a handful of objects and a set of instructions. Part 3 will take place when the pandemic ends. All artists and audience members will gather together and, using a shared script, will create a collective experience inspired by the previous encounters. ....

2020 year in review: Looking back on a fractured year in San Diego theater

When San Diego theaters abruptly shut down March 12 due to the pandemic, nobody expected they would stay dark for the rest of the year. And yet, out of the darkness, local artists began producing hundreds of online productions, play readings, cabarets and concerts, audio-casts, podcasts, interviews and education programs to stay connected to their art and their audiences.
For this year’s look back at the 2020 year in theater, I found it impossible to choose a top 10, since there’s no way to compare the work produced onstage before a live audience with shows presented on Zoom and Facebook Live, or filmed plays. So I offer my picks for standout work in a multitude of formats and themes. ....
