Misteri Nama Candi Borobudur, Nama Desa, Gunung atau Purba? : Okezone Nasional

Akan tetapi arkeolog lain beranggapan bahwa nama Budur berasal dari istilah bhudhara yang berarti gunung.
Banyak teori yang berusaha menjelaskan nama candi ini. Salah satunya menyatakan bahwa nama ini kemungkinan berasal dari kata Sambharabhudhara, yaitu artinya gunung (bhudara) di mana di lereng-lerengnya terletak teras-teras.
Berdasarkan prasasti karang tengah dan Tri Tepusan, Casparis memperkirakan pendiri Borobudur adalah raja Mataram dari wangsa Syailendra bernama Samaratungga yang melakukan pembangunan sekitar tahun 824 M. Candi itu baru dapat diselesaikan pada masa putrinya, Ratu Pramudhawardani.
Arsitektur yang menciptakan candi, berdasarkan tuturan masyarakat bernama Gunadharma. Pembangunan candi itu selesai pada tahun 847 M.
