Narrator dark skies and ruined water, burning rivers, oil spills, closed beaches, silent spring. 20 years ago, the wealthiest nation in the world that they had ever known, a people who enjoyed a level of private consumption undreamed of in the past found itself awash in environmental squalor. Our cars were comfortable, but our children could not play outside because of the smog. Our clothing was clean, but our bays were choked with sewage and our lakes were slowly dying. A wave of horror swept the nation as we began to realize what we had done to the Natural Systems that supported all life. The Environmental Movement was born. Governments at all levels responded with programs aimed at controlling pollution. By 1970, it had come obvious that further progress would require a Strong National effort. As a result, on december 2, 1970, president Richard Nixon consolidated 15 Environmental Programs from across the federal government to form the United States Environmental Protection agency. N
The Cuyahoga River as it reaches lake erie after a 100 mile twisting and turning journey from its headwaters is an exhaustive stream, abused and misused by man and his machines. Without the cuyahoga, cleveland and akron would not exist. The river was the reason for originally settling this portion of the western reserve in the 1780s. The river called crooked by the delaware indians provided a waterway to the interior of ohio. And so man came and continued coming. Until today, nearly two Million People live and work in the river basin. In creating this urban complex, man has used the river as men have always used rivers. The flow has been put to work as a navigable stream, a water supply, and as a sewer. Mans mark is everywhere. Is this mark an epitaph or the cuyahoga . The current president of the organization of american historians, earl lewis, you picked the theme for this conference, the work of freedom. How did you pick it, and why . Lewis i thought about the word freedom. Often we do not know what that means. Freedom requires work. Trying to invest and freedom should not be taken for granted. Would be the that theme for this years conference. The sessions that speak to that claim .
