It felt normal to us because we visited and enjoyed our forests in that condition for decades. But those decades also included aggressive fire suppression by land management agencies, which allowed unchecked growth in the understory and led to overstocked forests across our western landscape. Now our goal as land managers is to restore the ecological balance of our western forests, and it is my goal here on the Ochoco National Forest to manage this forest in a way that will maximize its health and resilience for our next generation of public land stewards. ....
