In Hamburg on the Eastern Cape of South Africa, a collective of textile artists, known as the Keiskamma Art Project, uses its skill and artistry to tell
It was just a matter of time before the magnificent handwork created at Hamburg’s Keiskamma Arts Project took on a new form. Founded 23 years ago by Dr Carol Hofmeyer, the project has produced award-winning embroideries documenting the history, culture and everyday life of the Eastern Cape. To own a piece stitched by the artists of Hamburg is to own a unique artwork, a tactile embodiment of the province’s rich heritage.
Instead of bringing a national gift from their country, the more than 80 contestants were required to customise a blank cape that they received from the Miss Universe organisers, taking inspiration.
