Iowa City High students place second at mock trial nationals

It was 6:34 p.m. when Captain Smith Dawson s towboat, the M/V Susan K. Roberts, departed from a lock and dam 16 miles upriver from Evansville, Indiana. In a rush, Dawson ignored a slow, no wake  order and the waning sun, maneuvering the barge through the busy and debris-clogged Ohio River  even after he heard a crash. He only learned later that the vessel had collided with a smaller boat, killing Jamie Catfish  Hunter, a pitcher on the local River Rats baseball team who had been jug fishing with a friend. The state charged Dawson with two level five felonies for the activities that took place on May 4, 2019: reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a crime.

Iowa proms during COVID-19: flowers, balloons, dresses, matching masks

On a recent Saturday night, the Scottish Rite Consistory in Des Moines became an enchanted ballroom with a floor littered with white and gold flower petals and balloons for students who received commemorative face masks reading Lincoln Prom 2021. Spread out over two floors to promote social distancing, the high school’s usual prom catering spread was replaced with pre-packaged bags of chips. A second ballroom was dedicated to dancing. Bringing back prom during a global pandemic comes with a lot of rules.  For Des Moines Lincoln High School, the rules included mandatory wearing of masks, except for official prom photo shoots, and limiting attendance to 250 people. Public health experts warn that large gatherings can spread the coronavirus.
