all a very, very good night. from all of our colleagues across the networks of nbc news, thanks for staying up late. i will see you at the end of tomorrow. let s do at home joining us this hour. it s great to have you here. do you remember the name brandon van grack? it s a very memorable name, so you might remember the sound of it. if not, the circumstance in which you first heard it. but if you are like me, in all likelihood, the first time you heard the name brandon van grack, it was the first time you heard the word, espionage, formerly associated with the presidency of donald trump. espionage as in the espionage act, as it not just spy movie stuff but as in u.s. law. but we are only about four months in to the u.s. trump administration in the new york times first reported that the then brand new trump administration had made a very unusual hiring decision that ultimately implicated the work of a veteran espionage prosecutor at the u.s. department of jus ....
possibly still to come. we are actually helping the american people instead of just playing political games. and the political payoff for doing the right thing. i ve been very clear, i think he s guilty of the most serious dereliction of duty of any president in our nation s history. reports of a quiet republican effort to try to save this chinese seat, will it work? plus, the julia podcaster from texas and his performative outrage. and a 50 million dollar judgment against alex jones for his sandy hook lies. when all in starts right now. good evening from washington, d.c., i am mehdi hassan in for chris hayes. so, it is friday morning, the first friday of the month of august, and you are producer of fox the country is awaiting the july jobs report. and even the white house has admitted that the numbers are going to be bad. of course, this is the store you go big. on the jobs report is going to be lousy. joe biden s economy is in the gutter. the white house ....
that john eastman continued his hunt for widespread voter fraud even after president biden was inaugurated. hours after president biden s inauguration, mr. eastman emailed rudy giuliani, donald j. trump s personal lawyer propose that they challenge in georgia for two senate seats that were won by democrats. according to the times eastman hoped that by trying to overturn another election and finding fraud in that race he would find proof that the 2020 election was stolen, but as we all know, was there no fraud. the election wasn t stolen and the big lie is still just that, a lie. the times also reports that eastman charged the trump campaign $270,000 and no surprise, given trump s long history of not paying his bills, it looks like trump never paid him. by the time mr. biden became president mr. eastman tried to be paid directly although two people with knowledge of the campaign s finances said he never was. john eastman has been under a lot of scrutiny from the justice ....
Levels that you worked at, is that wrong? is that weird? is that appropriate? is that normal? how do you view that? i guess i view it as irrelevant, right? the reality is that there are probably outreaches that occur to senior levels of government, the department of justice, all the time. this is something where i cannot see or think of a situation where an outreach like that would have any impact on the investigation. and so, appropriate or not, again, i don t think it will have any impact on the investigation. and again, really, i would consider it to be noise or distraction, one of the fact is, again, there are real national security issues that should be the focus. let me ask you about something which may just be a distraction, from the outside, it seems at least fraught. we have now seen three trump white house lawyers, white house counsel pat cipollone, his deputy pat philbin, and now, today we learned eric herschmann, all white house lawyers working for the president, all ha ....
Worth keeping in mind that they are really about to run up against a wall. so what significance do you see in trump s lawyers talking directly to the doj? is this a prelude to something? or are we making a big deal out of a routine procedure? so i certainly caution viewers not to get too excited. we saw in [inaudible] like these the mueller investigation. yes, we did. did not result in any charges against donald trump. but i think it is a reflection how, in recent weeks, we ve seen a lot of news reports that suggest that the justice department investigation is heating up. we saw reports that white house counsel pat cipollone, his deputy pat philbin, were testifying before a federal grand jury. there are a lot of indications that the department is, at the very least, looking very seriously and closely at trump s personal role in ginning up the violence on january 6th and the events ahead of it. so, i think this new reporting reflects that trump, like ....
