Tuesday, July 13, 2021 - 5:28 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week OGDENSBURG City council tabled a resolution calling on the state to address blight at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric center Monday for fears that the move might impact the state prison closures, which have yet to be announced. On Monday Deputy Mayor John Rishe garnered support from fellow councilors to call on the state to clean up the long vacant buildings at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. Rishe said that the state has taken no action to stabilize buildings on the SLPC property that have been vacant since the early 1980s. ....
Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - 9:11 am OGDENSBURG City Council added the Ogdensburg Journal to its list of designated papers. The city has also designated the North Country This Week and the Watertown Daily Times as designated papers. The designation allows the Journal to accept legal advertisements from the city. The action raised some concern from Deputy Mayor John Rishe who said such designations are generally done at the January meeting. However the vote was unanimous with agreement by council to include the paper as at least though the end of 2021. The Journal, which is owned by the Johnson News Corp., which also owns the Watertown Daily Times. ....

Skelly says work is underway at the Ogdensburg beach and he remains hopeful for a July opening. While City Manager Stephen Jellie is ironing out details with the state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation and finding lifeguards, city Department of Public Works crews and employees at the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority are making improvements to the former beach area. Skelly said when the city asked the OBPA to help secure a lease for the beach for the city they stepped up and answered the call. ....

City Councilor Michael Powers was officially censured in a 4-3 vote at a special meeting Thursday that did not allow for public comment. In an interview leading up to the meeting Power said he was fine with the censure but questioned why the same standard wasn’t applied to other councilors. “I already acknowledged my wrong doing. I’m human. I’m passionate about what is right and I will always be passionate about what is right. I had a slip of the tongue which I acknowledged immediately and apologized twice that same night in open session to the public,” Powers said. “I am fine for being censured for a mistake, but I think that standard should apply to all members of the council, not ....
