Columbus Symphony announces full slate of new season concerts

For its 2021-22 season, the Columbus Symphony will celebrate two momentous occasions: first, the 70th anniversary of the organization’s founding in 1951; and second, its emergence from the current, pandemic-altered season.
Although a reduced version of the symphony has been giving a steady stream of limited-capacity concerts in the Ohio Theatre this season, symphony leaders acknowledge that audiences expect big and bold concerts in the season ahead.
“We were going to do the very best we could in every circumstance, but we also have been saying for a good six months that we were not going to limp out of COVID that we were going to burst out of COVID,” Executive Director Denise Rehg said. “That is what the season is meant to do.” ....

Columbus Symphony's Picnic With the Pops set to return

The Columbus Symphony’s Picnic With the Pops concerts, one of central Ohio’s most popular annual outdoor entertainment events, is set to return this summer.
After the pandemic led to the cancelation of last year’s edition, the symphony announced Friday that it will bring back the weekend concert series this summer at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons.
The concerts, which will take place on Saturdays from June 12 through July 31, will feature the symphony accompanying leading pop acts and artists. (At least one concert will also feature a performance on a Friday.)
The lineup of guest artists, as well as details on tickets and safety protocols, will be announced soon. ....

Columbus Symphony exceeds goal with virtual benefit for music education

Last month, the Columbus Symphony held its first-ever all-virtual benefit to support its music-education programs.
Normally an in-person benefit concert takes place in the Ohio Theatre, but during the pandemic, symphony leaders decided to present a prerecorded 45-minute video on its website and engage its 47 full-time musicians in a week of online outreach to students.
The format may have been unusual, but symphony leaders report that the results exceeded expectations.
Eclipsing the symphony’s goal of $100,000, some $141,000 was raised as part of the benefit, said Executive Director Denise Rehg.
“The lion’s share of the money actually comes from individuals who are particularly committed to our service area as regards to children,” Rehg said. “We actually outperformed last year.” ....

For the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, music education is a priority

When Columbus Symphony concertmaster Joanna Frankel talks about the “crown jewel” of the organization, she isn’t referring to the opulent Ohio Theatre, where the organization performs most concerts; or to a treasured musical instrument; or even to a favorite piece in the classical repertoire.
Instead, Frankel is talking about the symphony’s music education programs.
“That’s something that the Columbus Symphony hangs its hat upon really trying to get that value to children,” Frankel said.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, symphony officials say that its education programs will have reached more than 50,000 central Ohio children by the end of the 2020-21 season. ....
