For the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, music education is a priority Peter Tonguette When Columbus Symphony concertmaster Joanna Frankel talks about the “crown jewel” of the organization, she isn’t referring to the opulent Ohio Theatre, where the organization performs most concerts; or to a treasured musical instrument; or even to a favorite piece in the classical repertoire. Instead, Frankel is talking about the symphony’s music education programs. “That’s something that the Columbus Symphony hangs its hat upon really trying to get that value to children,” Frankel said. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, symphony officials say that its education programs will have reached more than 50,000 central Ohio children by the end of the 2020-21 season. ....
Russian travels: Symphony winter concerts rescheduled The Columbus Symphony will make its annual sojourn to Russia this week with two limited-capacity Russian Winter Festival concerts in the Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St. The doubleheader is the result of a rescheduled program from this past weekend. The first program, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, will feature pianist Caroline Hong performing “Piano Concerto No. 3” by Sergei Prokofiev. The second rescheduled program now is set for 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday and will include pieces by Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Seating is limited to 300 attendees. Both performances will be available for online viewing: the Sunday program on Jan. 29 and the other on Feb. 5 at columbussymphony.com. ....
