voting latino citizens and putting them in a district to try and address, you know, voting rights act requirements and that was found to be discriminatory and vita dill lugs. they also were cracking different segments of latino voters in and around dallas and harris county. there is a little bit of a precedent here for the deputy of justice to point to past success in the courts and hope for future success. now, there has also been a major change in redistricting law. and that was a supreme court discussion in 2019, rucho versus common cause where the supreme court said that partisan gerrymandering, meaning any gerrymander designed to give a party an advantage over another party in their map drawing couldn t be challenged in federal courts. it cop challenged at the state level. so that took away a major avenue of challenging gerrymandered
the supreme court has observed a core principle of our democracy is that, quote, voters should choose the representatives, not the other way around. the complaint we filed today alleges that texas has violated section two by creating redistricting plans that deny or abridge the rights of latino and black voters to vote on account of their race, color, or membership in a language minority group. a big deal. that was attorney general merrick garland just a couple hours ago announcing a formal complaint against texas again over its plan the redraw voting maps in that state citing discrimination towards minorities. marks d.o.j. s first major legal action on redistricting ahead of the 2022 mid terms in the 2024 preks election n. its lawsuit d.o.j. writes this, quote, this is not the first time texas has
