Wright received 19.2% of the votes and Republican state Rep. Jake Ellzey 13.9%, according to unofficial results from the Texas Secretary of Stateâs office. Just 354 votes separated Ellzey and Sanchez.
Political analysts and observers say low Democrat turnout, a field of 23 candidates and a district that favors Republicans played a role in keeping a Democrat out of the race.Â
While former President Trump credits his endorsement of Wright, Sanchez thinks the outcome on May 1 could have been different if the state Democratic Party did more to step in and support a single candidate.
Texas Republican Susan Wright Advances to Runoff in Race for US House Seat
Susan Wright received enough votes to advance to the runoff, getting 19.2 percent of the tally.
Wright entered the race following the death of Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas), who died after testing positive for COVID-19 in February.
Wright released a short statement late Saturday, writing on Twitter, “Let’s go win this!” She used the hashtag for “Make America Great Again,” President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan.
Trump endorsed Wright last week, telling supporters that she “will be strong on the Border, Crime, Pro-Life, our brave Military and Vets, and will ALWAYS protect your Second Amendment.”

Susan Wright and Jake Ellzey are in a runoff for Texas’ District 6 seat in Congress
Susan Wright, wife of the late Congressman Jim Wright, and Jake Ellzey, both Republicans, are headed into a runoff to represent Texas’ 6th Congressional District in Washington, D.C. They were the top two vote-getters in a field of 23 candidates in the gerrymandered district that stretches southeast from Dallas/Fort Worth into Ellis and Navarro Counties.
Wright brought in 19 percent of the vote, and Ellzey got nearly 14 percent. Jana Sanchez was the leading Democrat in the race, winning about 13 percent of the vote district wide.
