Milford's award-winning duck carver celebrates 98th birthday | Milford LIVE! - Local Delaware News, Kent and Sussex Counties


Award-winning duck carver, Doug Gibson, celebrated his 98
th birthday on February 28. Gibson has received many awards for his duck carvings, including Ducks Unlimited Carver of the Year and an invitation to the Smithsonian Institute’s Arts and Crafts Festival in Washington DC in 2003. At this event, Gibson demonstrated his methodology as well as his technique and was featured on a German TV news show.
Gibson was born in 1923 in Trappe, Maryland, the ninth of ten children. He spent his childhood on a farm and decided very early in life that he was going to find a way to get off the farm and own his own home. He attended school in Trappe until eighth grade and, upon graduating, walked to Easton to attend high school, a trip that today would take over three hours one way. After graduation from high school, he briefly attended Princess Anne Academy, now known as University of Maryland Eastern Shore. ....

Scott Rathfon named Engineer of the Year | Milford LIVE! - Local Delaware News, Kent and Sussex Counties


Scott Rathfon of Century Engineering has been named Delaware Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers
Scott Rathfon, P.E., who grew up in Georgetown and now lives in Lincoln, was recently named Delaware Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The nomination is in recognition of Engineers Week which is celebrated in February. Normally, Rathfon would have received the recognition at the Engineers Week banquet, but due to the ongoing pandemic, the organization had to handle things a little differently. The Engineer of the Year Award is presented to a someone with outstanding educational and collegiate achievements, professional and technical society activities along with civic, political and humanitarian activities. The award also recognizes continuing competence as well as engineering and professional achievements. ....
