Russia launches air attacks on Ukraine after Germany, U.S. agree to send tanks

By Tom Balmforth KYIV (Reuters) -Russia launched a rush-hour barrage of missiles towards Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least one person, the day after Kyiv secured Western pledges of dozens of modern battlefield tanks to try to push back the Russian invasion. Moscow reacted with fury to the German and American announcements, and has in the past responded to apparent Ukrainian successes with air strikes that have left millions without light, heat or water. The Ukrainian military said it had shot down all 24 drones sent overnight by Russia, including 15 around the capital, with no damage reported. But soon afterwards, air raid alarms sounded across Ukraine as people were heading to work, and senior officials said air defences were shooting down incoming missiles. The Kremlin said on Thursday it saw the promised delivery of Western tanks to Ukraine as direct involvement of the United States and Europe in the 11-month-old conflict, something both deny. In the capital, crowds of people to ....

Swiss body proposes removing barriers to re-export arms to Ukraine

GENEVA (Reuters) - A Swiss parliamentary body proposed on Tuesday waiving a re-export ban that prevents ammunition it manufactures from being re-exported from another country to Ukraine. The recommendation passed with 14 in favour and 11 against and will require later approval from parliament. The majority of the commission deems that Switzerland should make a contribution to European security, which includes providing more aid to Ukraine, a Swiss parliamentary committee said in a press release late on Tuesday. Switzerland has previously rejected appeals from Germany to allow it to re-export Swiss-made ammunition to Ukraine, saying such a move would violate its neutrality. But pressure has been rising for Bern to review its policies, including at the World Economic Forum it hosted in Davos last week. The committee added in the statement that its proposals did not violate Swiss neutrality rules since the arms would go via another country and not directly to a conflict zone. (Reporting b ....

Poland signals intent to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine

By Pawel Florkiewicz WARSAW/KYIV (Reuters) -Poland said on Monday it would ask Germany for permission to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine - and would send them whether or not Berlin agreed as long as other countries did too. The Kyiv government wants the German-made Leopard 2, one of the most widely used Western tanks, to help it break through Russian lines and recapture territory this year. Germany, which must approve re-exports of the Leopard, has so far held back, wary of moves that could cause Moscow to escalate, and says other NATO countries have yet to formally ask to re-export them. Western countries have committed billions of dollars in new military aid to Ukraine in recent days: on Monday, European Union foreign ministers agreed to release their latest tranche, worth 500 million euros ($545 million), three sources said. But at both Monday s EU meeting in Brussels and last week s meeting of Western defence ministers in Germany, the issue of battle tanks dominated discussions. At t ....

Poland seeks coalition to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine

By Pawel Florkiewicz and Gabriela Baczynska WARSAW/BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Poland said on Monday it would ask Germany for permission to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine - and would send them whether or not Berlin agreed as long as other countries did too. The Kyiv government wants the German-made Leopard 2, one of the most widely used Western tanks, to help it break through Russian lines and recapture territory this year. Germany, which must approve re-exports of the Leopard, has held back, wary of moves that could cause Moscow to escalate, and says other NATO countries have yet to formally ask to re-export them. On Sunday, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Berlin would not stand in Poland s way and on Monday, the European Union s top diplomat Josep Borrell said Germany was not blocking the export of the tanks. But Warsaw s call for a coalition signalled any transfer was still some way off. Western countries have committed billions of dollars in new military aid to Ukraine in rec ....

Brazil defense minister says military not directly involved in Brasilia riots

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil Minister of Defense Jose Mucio said on Friday that the country s armed forces were not directly involved in the riots by supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro who stormed government buildings calling for a coup. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has criticized the military for failing to act to stop the riots on Jan 8, a week after he took office, and said they did not provide his government with intelligence on the imminent insurrection. Mucio met on Friday with Lula and the commanders of the armed forces aiming to reduce tensions. He said the riots were not discussed and the meeting focused on plans for military procurement and investments in Brazil s defense industry, with business leaders present, the minister said. I understand that there was no direct involvement of the Armed Forces, but if anyone was personally involved (in the riots) that will be investigated, Mucio told reporters after the meeting. He said investigations and puni ....
